Mitigating Volcanic Hazards
Video, powerpoint, and activity from my recent talk at the Boone Pickens School of Geology.
The sun sets…
On Tuesday (Oct. 4) the R/V Thomas G. Thompson crossed the bar in Yaquina Bay and moored to the pier at the NOAA Marine Operations Center in Newport. With that, the second leg was completed, and the Endurance 17 Expedition came to a successful end.
SeaCubes recovered!
I am happy to report that all deployments were completed successfully and the SeaCubes deployed this spring have been recovered and prepared for processing in our lab at Oklahoma State University!
A cruise with a view
The start of October found us with the sun rising over the Oregon Coast…
Through the fog and surf
Thursday afternoon saw the R/V Thomas G. Thompson slipping its moorings and gliding through the fog back out to sea…
Pop goes the weasel
During the first leg of Endurance 17 the recovery of an inshore surface mooring did not go according to plan….
Recovery
In an earlier post we explored a bit of what it takes to deploy a mooring and its related parts, but that is only one-half of the operation. For each mooring or profiler that gets deployed, a different one must be picked up and recovered. OOI operates the Coastal Endurance Array on a 6-month schedule…
Bioluminescence!
The nighttime seas lit up for the crew of R/V Thompson the other night as bioluminescent algae put on a show. With only the lights of the distant Washington shore to light the night, the conditions were perfect to see this amazing display.
Day 2 - It’s mooring time!
Today was a busy day as we got down to business performing the primary function of the cruise which is the deployment and recovery of the moorings that make up the OOI Endurance Array. ..
Day 1: Leaving Newport
Today was the day! We started the first real day of the cruise with briefings from both the deck lead from OOI (Alex Wick) and the captain and his crew. Both centered around a really important subject on board a working ship: Safety! We got information on muster stations in case of emergency and learned how to put on an immersion suit (also known as a gumby suit)…
Day 0 - Newport, OR
Hello from Newport, Oregon the staging location for the OOI (Ocean Observatories Initiative) Endurance 17 expedition. The weather was beautiful for a full day of loading instrumentation and material onto the R/V Thomas G. Thompson.
