A cruise with a view
The start of October found us with the sun rising over the Oregon Coast…
Through the fog and surf
Thursday afternoon saw the R/V Thomas G. Thompson slipping its moorings and gliding through the fog back out to sea…
Pop goes the weasel
During the first leg of Endurance 17 the recovery of an inshore surface mooring did not go according to plan….
Bioluminescence!
The nighttime seas lit up for the crew of R/V Thompson the other night as bioluminescent algae put on a show. With only the lights of the distant Washington shore to light the night, the conditions were perfect to see this amazing display.
Day 1: Leaving Newport
Today was the day! We started the first real day of the cruise with briefings from both the deck lead from OOI (Alex Wick) and the captain and his crew. Both centered around a really important subject on board a working ship: Safety! We got information on muster stations in case of emergency and learned how to put on an immersion suit (also known as a gumby suit)…
Day 0 - Newport, OR
Hello from Newport, Oregon the staging location for the OOI (Ocean Observatories Initiative) Endurance 17 expedition. The weather was beautiful for a full day of loading instrumentation and material onto the R/V Thomas G. Thompson.
